Norse Gods - THOR by Anonymous Mint 1oz .999 Silver Round BU Finish

Anonymous Mint

The second coin in the Norse Gods series, THOR.

THOR, God of Thunder, is portrayed on the obverse of the coin. In Norse mythology, Thor presides over thunder, lightening, wind, rain, fair weather and agricultural crops. Thor is the son of Odin and a beautiful giantess, Fjorgyn.  He is a large powerful man with a red beard and fierce eyes serving as protector of both gods and humans against the forces of evil.  Riding in a chariot pulled by goats, Tanngrisnir (Tooth-gap) and Tanngnjostr (Tooth-gnasher), Thor would wear a magical belt that would double his enormous strength and wield his hammer, Mjolnir, which he would hurl.  Mjolnir would hit its target and immediately return to Thor's hand.  The sound of thunder was created by Thor's chariot rolling across the sky while lightening flashed and bolted when Thor threw his hammer.  Thor rode across the sky crushing the skulls of frost giants and trolls with Mjolnir. Second only to Odin, Thor was the most popular of the gods.  Hammer shaped amulets were worn by men to symbolize and worship Thor well into the era of the Christianization of Scandinavia.  To his honor, a day of the week has been named after him, Thor's Day, or Thursday. The reverse design is VALKYRIE, Chooser of the Slain.
