Norse Gods - HEL by Anonymous Mint 1oz .999 Silver Round BU Finish

Anonymous Mint

The third coin in the Norse Gods series, HEL.

HEL, Goddess of Death, is portrayed on the obverse of the coin surrounded by the dead.  In Norse mythology, Hel's parents were the trickster god Loki and the giantess Angerboda with whom he had three children.  The gods of Asgard were aware that these children were dwelling in the land of the giants, and they feared the woe and misfortune the offspring could bring.  Odin sent for the children.  The first was the Fenrir Wolf, the second was the Midgard Serpent and the third was Hel.  Hel's looks were stern, grim and downtrodden.  One half of her blue, the other half the hue of flesh.  Odin cast Hel into the lowest of places, Helheim/ Niflheim, where she was given power over the nine worlds.  Hel became the Goddess of the Underworld where she was to house those who died of sickness or old age.  The name of her hall was Eljudner.  Her table - famine.  Her knife - starvation.  Her threshold - stumbling block.  Her care - sickbed.  Hel did nothing to make her guests happy.  To be told to go to hell meant to go and die.  Hel's great mansion had surrounding walls of strange height with huge gates.  Chained to those gates was Garm, her howling hound.  Once in a while, Hel left the gate open, and the dead roamed the world to the horror of the living. The reverse design is VALKYRIE, Chooser of the Slain.
